I just got off the phone with Dennis Brantley, the head coach at Fort Bend Eklins I was trying to run down yesterday.
Brantley confirmed that UNT has picked up a commitment from cornerback Jamal Marshall.
Marshall is 6-3, 185, and was on all three of Elkins relay teams what went to the state track meet.
He was on a loaded team and blossomed late when he moved to cornerback midway through his senior year. He didn't make the all-district team, but showed the potential to grow into a good college player late in the season.
He was overshadowed by Elkins star safety Corey Thompson, who is headed to LSU.
"He is 6-3 and can play corner," Brantley said. "He came on a little late, which is why a lot of schools missed him. His best football is ahead of him. With his measurements he is only going to get better."
At 6-3, 185, one would think he would be a prime candidate to move to safety, but Brantley believes his future on the college level is at cornerback.
"North Texas is getting a steal," Brantley said. "In five years I think he will play pro football."
I couldn't find much on Marshall at all in terms of the recruiting rankings. Rivals and Scout don't have him listed, which isn't surprising considering he was a late bloomer.
There certainly will be an opportunity for Marshall to play early. UNT lost a ton out of its secondary after last season.
I am supposed to get a call from Marshall later in the day. I will add anything I get from him to the blog later.

So, UNT went from Div. II picks to a player that is not even listed? This is getting better and better...
Perhaps a shrewd recruiting move... glass half full here. Like his height.
NCMeanGreen, your optimism is contagious. Look at the number of young men that weren't highly rated that turned into great ball players and look at those that were highly rated that never lived up to their billing. Give the young man a chance for goodness sakes.
A player who is 6-3, 185 and has the speed to run on relays at a major high school is very welcome. A lack of speed and size has been a major problem at North Texas.
Finding "sleepers" is a big part of recruiting. I remember several that North Texas found in the past that no one else seemed to notice. Joe Greene and Cedric Hardman(sp)come to mind.
I trust what Coach Mac is doing. 100% GO MEAN GREEN!
Thanks for the coverage Vito.
NCMG, Show me your coaching credentials.
Didn't think so.
Good luck finding a 6'3'' CB with track speed anywhere, let alone this late in recruiting.
Welcome to the Mean Green Mr. Brantley!
Great committment- Glad to see us on this type of player and playing this level of High School FB- LR
I am really curious who has decommitted, Brett. Get on the phones!
