UNT picks up another from Martin

Just got off the phone with Bob Wager again. The Arlington Martin coach said that defensive tackle Mustafa Haboul has committed to UNT.

I will update this blog when I get him on the phone, which I don't think will be a problem.

Turns out I was right, it wasn't that hard to get Mustafa on the phone (great name by the way).

Haboul is a little on the small side at 6-0, 250, but apparently has a very good motor and was productive in high school. He had eight sacks last season and was a first-team All-District 4-5A selection.

He picked UNT over Division II programs Tarleton State, Midwestern State and Texas A&M-Commerce.

Haboul was recruited by Mike Grant.

He is good friends with Connor Trussell, the offensive lineman UNT picked up from Martin this week.

Turns out there is a connection that has helped UNT tap into the Martin pipeline.

UNT strength coach Frank Wintrich's first job out of school was at Hardin-Simmons in Abilene. The strength coach at Martin is Anthony Gonzales who played for Hardin-Simmons while Wintrich was there.

I will have more on Haboul in tomorrow's paper.

Brett, have you touched base with the other kids on our list of verbals to see if anyone has switched? I am wondering where we are getting the scholarships, if Mac said we sign 23 including the 2 transfers.

I'm seeing a pattern to our recruiting strategy: on the small side and no previous FBS offers.

Whooo, glad we won that recruiting battle over all those big time Div 2 schools you just named. We are just setting the world on fire right now, that makes me feel so much better about our middle of the pack recruiting class. Go mean green!

Now NT is competition against Div. II?? Wow...

Let me reminde all of you that judge these kids before they ever set foot on campus of the following:

Patrick Cobbs: No other D1 offer.
Johnny Quinn: We were his only D1 offer.
Lance Dunbar: 2 star rated recruit.
Brandon Kennedy: I believe only D1 offer.
Casey Fitzgerald: Walk-on
Craig Roberson: 2-star recruit
Chris Hurd: walk-on

And these:

Trent Stanley: JUCO All-American
Alonzo Horton: JUCO 3-star recruit I believe originally signed with Auburn
Dawaylon Cook: 3-star signed away from TCU
Justin Edwards: 3-star signed away from bigger schools.
Kylee Hill: 3-star recruit
Troy Franklin: 3-star, all state recruit
Nate Jenkins: 3-star JUCO
Spencer Stack: All-state 5A Player

With all due respect to the young men on the second list, these ratings systems are just a way for the recruiting sites to draw interest. You just never know what you have until they set foot on campus. Give these young men a fighting chance.

Welcome to North Texas.

Hear, hear JD! Awesome post. I know that Brett thinks that the ratings system is pretty accurate, or at least is easy to point to when programs have success.
However, I think that at the lower levels - such as the Sun Belt - the coaching is far more important than whatever natural talent the players have. With Dan McCarney and his staff in place I think that not only will our recruiting classes get "better", we will also start seeing more and more success out on the field.

I second JD in saying, "Welcome to North Texas"

With all due respect JD, historical precedence shows that teams with the higher rated recruiting classes and, by extension, the higher rated recruits typically are more successful than those teams with the lower rated classes.

Who would be more successful, LSU with our current class...or NT with LSU's current class??

He is from a great defense with 5A Playoff winning experience. He lined up against Euless and Southlake offensive lineman. 5-star recruits does not mean hard workers and can't miss- Ask UT the last 2 years.

That's a great comparison NCMeanGreen, us and LSU. You should also compare us to Ohio State, Texas, etc... while you're at it. If we were losing a 5-star like Mario Edwards and replacing them with unrated players that would be one thing, but nothing like that has happened now has it?

Why don't you take a minute, review our recruiting classes on say Rivals, and come back and tell me how many of those highly rated 3-star recruits panned out and how many 2-star recruits exceeded initial expectations.
