Wondering where UNT is going to get those extra scholarships to cover all the players who have committed over the last few days?
Well, UNT is going to grayshirt three players: Tyler Chapel Hill running back Andrew Tucker, Wichita Falls defensive lineman Dylan McDorman and Corsicana wide receiver Christian Hines.
When a player grayshirts that means he does not enroll in the fall. He waits and enrolls at the semester break and then goes through spring practice.
That way a team can grab more players in a class than it has scholarships available for the upcoming season
Hines texted me this afternoon and confirmed that he is grayshirting. Chapel Hill coach Thomas Sitton said that is Tucker's plan and McDorman called me back and told me that he will likely grayshirt. I think it is more of a foregone conclusion.
Schools with smart coaching staffs like Troy and those in the SEC use similar tactics.
The bottom line is that all three UNT players will have scholarships waiting for them at the semester break
But in a side note, I find it kind of ironic that UNT put it out there that the school is opposed to the idea of over signing when it is essentially doing just that tomorrow. That's what grayshirting is -- picking up more players in a class than it has scholarships for by waiting until the semester break to have players enroll.

Grey shirt for a DT???? That doesn't make any damn sense. I think we need all of our DT recruits to play this fall! Too thin there.
Again, REALLY starting to question some of the decisions this coaching staff is making. We need DT's now...not later!
It may be that those three players need surgery or rehabbing from surgery. If they enroll in the fall they basically burn their redshirts rehabbing instead of getting bigger and stronger and gaining valuable experience as you would during a red shirt season. If they rehab while on gray shirt, they have all of their eligibility and redshirt available to them when they enroll during the break. That would be the only reason to gray shirt.
I don't think they are stockpiling scholarships. UNT is no position to do that at this point in time.
The Sky is falling....the Sky is falling!!!! Eeeeeek!!!!! Let Coach Mac and crew work.
Go Mean Green!

All of our DT's that played last year are returning and we will add the DT from Chapel Hill. Then again, I think that most of us are much more qualified to make these decisions than Coach Mac and his staff.
I don't know much about the grayshirt concept, but I do know something about students finishing high school. Many can not score high enough on the SAT or ACT to qualify. I have to wonder if enrolling at a Community College and being "successful" for a semester will help them qualify for entry at a 4-year college. If they are using this method in the SEC then you know it has to have a special motive.
Why greyshirt and then reach for marginal players to fill out the allotment of ships this year after some defections? Seems like you will eventually end up with a watered down roster when all are on board.
