Thought on UNT-MTSU

Tough night in UNT land.

How tough?

Consider:

We all know that both the UNT men and women had a chance to win late only to be swept by Middle Tennessee in tight games.

The UNT women have lost eight straight to the Blue Raiders, a streak they had a chance to snap before making a few mistakes late, turning the ball over in couple of bad spots and giving up a couple of easy buckets in a 70-68 loss.

Missing a free throw late was a killer as well.

The UNT men came storming back from 15 down only to go more than two minutes in crunch time without scoring in a 68-66 loss.

MTSU walked out a perfect 20-0 on the year -- 10-0 for the women and 10-0 for the men.

Oh, yeah.

And the video truck went out of commission, killing the scoreboard for a while.

Just another fun tidbit on a decidedly non-fun night.

All is not lost, though. The UNT men hung with the top team in the Sun Belt and could have won if a few more shots have dropped. I have no idea how Alzee Williams' shot or two of the tip chances that followed didn't drop with less than a minute left. UNT isn't where it wants to be, but it is going to have a chance to earn a first-round bye in the Sun Belt tournament and will be a tough out.

Tony Mitchell continues to play well when he can stay on the floor and Alzee Williams had a monster night with a career high 29 points. Roger Franklin's shooting woes are a concern, but hopefully that is something UNT can work out. The play at the end of the game when Mitchell took the 3 was an option play. Jones wanted to see Mitchell go to the basket there, by the way.

The fact UNT was even in a game with the MTSU women is encouraging. The Blue Raiders have pretty much pounded the Mean Green every time out over the last several years, including that 119-51 debacle a few years ago.

UNT is moving in the right direction in that series, even if it isn't the win column yet.

Jasmine Godbolt scored her 1,000th point tonight. Not that she cared. It looked like both Godbolt and Laura McCoy (the Blonde Bomber also played well) shed a few tears over the loss.

It's never easy to be swept, especially by MTSU, one of those teams UNT fans are not real fond of, but not all is lost.

I expected that the Men's team would be able to play well from time to time. Especially before we lost players to grades and injury. But, I never dreamed that the Ladies would play at the level they are showing. They don't know the meaning of the word "quit." Those young women "believe", and that makes a real difference.
