Big news came down yesterday.
Ok, it was big news about possible big news.
Still, this is about the possibility of UNT landing a highly rated quarterback. Just the possibility of Scotty Young maybe thinking about considering playing for the Mean Green ranks as a headliner.
Quick detour -- I like Derek Thompson as a player. I like him a lot because he has done what once seemed impossible.
Thompson seems to have stabilized the train wreck that has been UNT's quarterback situation for going on a decade.
Since Scott Hall (should be a Hall of Famer) graduated back in 2004, UNT has rolled out a string of guys who for one reason or another couldn't get the job done.
Daniel Meager played well at times, but didn't work out.
Wilson Phillips had its moments, much like the 90s pop act, but didn't pan out either. Woody Wilson transferred, Matt Phillips showed flashes of solid play, but didn't turn out to be the answer.
We were told to hold on for your new QB.
Giovanni Vizza had the crap beaten out of him for a couple of years, took a look at the, cough, cough, problems with the program, and decided football wasn't fun any more. He walked away.
Riley Dodge couldn't stay healthy, had no arm left by the end of his time at UNT and bolted when his dad was fired.
Thompson has already had a whole string of injuries and the backup situation is a bit dicey with Brent Osborn and Andrew McNulty.
UNT didn't sign a quarterback in its last class.
And UNT might have a chance to get Scotty Young? A top 10 quarterback nationally in his class? And he's from Denton?
This is about as big a no-brainer as there is.
Even if he only starts one year after Thompson graduates, he is still more than worth it.
Once Young gets his release from Tech, UNT has to at least take a long look at it him.
UNT just has to hope no other possibility comes up.
The last situation UNT would want to see is the hometown kid transfer to another school and put up huge numbers.
We should have a better idea of what the market is like for Young over the next couple of days.
I can't imagine how UNT won't be a player in the sweepstakes.

Don Brett Vito Corlione I am sooooooo TIRED of you trying to run down UNT and bash everything UNT related and I am also tired of you sugar coating everything UNT related and being a voice box for the UNT athletics administration without any impartiality
oh wait I don't have a clue what I am talking about just like a great deal of the chubbyheads that cheer for UNT and think that a reporter can make or break the things that happen or don't happen for a university
keep up the good and bad work Brett because I still have to sleep on my back every night now waiting to hate or love what you report on UNT each day!
PS hey Brett the verification code for me to submit this love/criticism of you had TD in it as one of the letter sequences.....did YOU DO THIS ON PURPOSE!!!!!
STOP IT BRETT!!!!
Well, maybe this is the beginning of getting Denton and Denton Ryan kids to consider staying home and playing at Apogee Palace. Maybe not.
But hey, I hope this kid comes to Denton and competes really hard for the starting job. 1 year or 2 years starting, I don't care as long as the best man drives the unt offense boat!
Go Mean Green!
You have issues Chubby.....I think your screen name says it all. I worry about you and Brett..
Although I would love the competition and attention this would bring to North Texas, I just can't see this happening. I expect Mr. Young will go the FCS route where he will not lose a year of eligilbility and has the chance to play immediately.
Someone should mention to him that North Texas probably won't be in the Sun Belt by the time he's cleared to play!
^ you're a big dreamer man. I like it
This is good news for several reasons - puts us in comparison and context also of UT's Gilbert transferring to SMU. Well..we have a guy from Tech that's thinking about coming here! All around good press for the program.. Hope it works out.
In a related note on recruiting: Here's additional good press for UNT and Coach Mac efforts:

On a different but similar front. Josh Williams from Ryan is no longer a Husker for breaking team rules. No word on which rules, but he has graduated and should be elegible this year if he was intrested in playing this year. He did not start at Nebraska but was in the rotation at defensive end and played a lot. He could upgrade the D line.
