The UNT men lost their game against Louisiana-Lafayette 57-53 today. The women won 78-40.
The loss was a key one for the UNT men, who had a chance to make a move up in the Sun Belt Conference standings and get the bye that would be really handy in the conference tournament.
UNT was just a half game behind the Cajuns in the Sun Belt West Division standings.
The Mean Green is 8-6 at this point and could end up with a long path to travel if it is going to get to the NCAA tournament. The top five teams in the league get a bye in the first round of the conference tournament in Hot Springs. It's darn near impossible to win the tournament without a bye, especially with a bench as short as UNT's is these days. UNT was sitting in fifth place heading into tonight's games.
ULL ran multiple defenders at Tony Mitchell every chance it got and took him out of the game. He finished with just seven points, one better than his season low. He took only eight shots.
It was a game when you could really see that UNT missed Chris Jones and Jordan Willams.UNT needed another scoring threat on the perimeter. Tyler Hall had a good game with 10 points. Alzee Williams had 12 , but it took him 16 shots to get there.
UNT was terrible from the line, which didn't help matters. UNT hit just 11 of 24.
The UNT women fared a whole lot better and pulled out of what started to look like a late season spiral by hammering ULL 78-40.
The win snapped a four-game losing streak that sent UNT tumbling in the Sun Belt standings. ULL hasn't won a Sun Belt game all season.
Let's be clear here. Karen Aston is doing a great job with what she inherited. UNT could have lost the rest of its games this season, and it still would have been a step forward for UNT.
